This summer we are planning a trip which requires us to fly (not my favourite!). I have not flown in about 11 years, so I haven’t had much opportunity to overcome my plane-related anxiety :) We always read Psalm 121 on the days we leave for vacation or road trips and so it’s increasingly been on my mind as this bigger trip approaches. I think you’ll notice the Psalm 121 echoes in the poem below.
My inner thoughts, oh Lord, you see— My eyes have scanned the looming hills. Danger awaits at every turn— I can conjure up countless ills That threaten to paralyze me. Where will my help come from today? The rulers of the earth below Are but a drop in a bucket— Grasshoppers that circle the globe. My help comes from God, who sustains. Why, oh my soul, are you cast down? You are in the palm of his hand. He preserves you from all evil— So rest in the good of his plan! He holds you in life even now. Where can I go from your presence? You are there when I rise or sleep. I cannot hide from your spirit— Though I reach thirty thousand feet, The hairs of my head are precious. What reason do I have to fear? My Father’s care will never cease. He carries me close to his heart— The Lord guides me and safely keeps, He will remain faithfully near.
I understand that feeling about flying as well. God will be with you the whole way - how exhilarating that is! Happy travels.
